He argues that American meritocracy started in the early part of the 20th century sought to create a new elite based not on family but intelligence or at least academic success.
I should have loved it, but I think because I thought it was just about standardized testing I was confused when the author introduced all of the characters in the middle, and then had most of the rest of the book focus on affirmative action.
It is unfortunate that he wasted his talents on this disorganized and unfocused book.
It is still a story worth reading if you are interested in the debate over the tests merits, regardless of your position.
